Directed by production: Vladimir Mashkov
Scenography: Aleksandr Borovsky
The Passions of Bumbarash is among The Tabakov Theater's best-known and most popular productions, playing to full houses for 18 years. The stage version by Vladimir Mashkov had every bit the emotional impact of its famous movie counterpart from the 1960s. The story of a village kid who comes home from WWI only to find himself in the midst of a civil war – where, to him, there are no Reds and no Whites but only his friends and neighbors who are killing each other – made the audiences laugh, cry, and sing, along with the actors, the fiery songs that many have known since childhood. The show retained the spirit of the "old Tabakerka", a home away from home where all the actors were a little like siblings. The role of Bumbarash was one of Mr. Mironov's first big stage successes and a rare chance to see the dramatic actor's impressive musical talents.
