Created by the renowned German stage director Peter Stein, his first experience working with Russian actors.

The Russian critics didn't take to the production at first. At seven hours' running time, it was a theatrical marathon to which the modern audiences are not accustomed. However, the production was popular in Europe and extensively toured both in Russia and internationally. Yevgeny Mironov's performance had inspired Stein to eventually stage a Russian Hamlet with Yevgeny in the title role.
