The second annual TERRITORIЯ Festival was concluded with an event that was simultaneously the Russian premiere of the oratorium De temporum fine comoedia by German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) and the first joint effort by director Kirill Serebrennikov and conductor Teodor Currentzis. The would-be creators of a new era in Russian theater, who propose to get rid of the stale clichés in stage representation in favor of new forms, have chosen to deliver their message through one of the oldest peformance genres which has stood the test of time – liturgical drama, or the mystery play, a complex collective religious ritual that includes theatrical elements. This ambitious project, which embraced the parallel history of two 20th-century empires – Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany – became a philosophical dispute on the nature of atheism. The drama, featuring a lights show, a massive orchestra, and renowned stage actors and opera singers supported by a cast of theater students from all over Russia, was performed once, on October 14, 2007, as part of the TERRITORIЯ Festival in Moscow.
