In the summer of 1936, Colonel Kotov, a legendary military hero and a personal friend of Stalin's, is relaxing in his summer home with his wife Marusya and their daughter. The family idyll is disturbed by an unexpected visit from Mitya, the former ward of Marusya's father. Marusya and Mitya had been lovers and planned to get married, but their plans were thwarted by Kotov. Mitya now works for Internal Affairs, and has come to exert his revenge. Nikita Mikhalkov's Oscar-winning retro-drama addresses an infamous period in Russian history, creating an atmospheric portrayal of a little girl's long and happy day which ends with the arrest of her father. Burnt by the Sun is the winner of the Cannes Festival Grand Prix and the 1995 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Burned by the Sun 2, a sequel, came out in 2010.
